While it may not feel normal in any way, shape or form, Menopause is a NORMAL condition that all women will experience in their lifetime, typically somewhere between the ages of 45 & 55. You may have heard to it as “the change” and yes, your body will be going through many changes, and at times these changes can pack a pretty big punch, making you feel like your body is a total stranger and that nothing you do seems to have any positive impact in helping you to feel better or at the very least, like you have a handle on what the heck is happening. Rest assured, you are not crazy, you are not alone and there are things that you can do that can help you navigate this transition without ripping all your hair out.
When we look at lifestyle and then bring menopause into the picture, there are some key areas where you can make some lifestyle choice changes to support a better menopause experience. I'm not saying you can, nor will you, eliminate menopause or the symptoms you may be experiencing. However, by making some solid lifestyle changes you may find that your symptoms become less intense and maybe even less frequent.
So what are these categories I'm referring to? Well nothing that is going to come as a great shock to you however, if you've not ever really paid much attention and finding that menopause has you in a bit of a tailspin, these categories are worth re-evaluating.
Nutrition - Start really paying attention to how your body is responding to certain foods. There may be things that you either need to cut from your diet, include more of in your diet or just in general, improve you're eating habits and relationship with food.
Exercise - We all know that exercise is good for us. When it comes to menopause, while there is no scientific data that says "exercising will improve your menopause symptoms," those women who remain active through menopause report feeling better.
Sleep - This can be a challenging one since a lot of women find their sleep suffers during menopause. Establish a better evening routine to get your brain "in the zone" to support your chances of better quality rest.
Alcohol Consumption - So you feel like you've become something of a lightweight? Perhaps. With all the hormonal fluctuations going on in your body right now, you may find that your tolerance as well as your preferred taste for alcohol has changed. Studies show that daily alcohol consumption can make hot flashes and night sweats worse so monitoring your habits in this area are an advantage to your overall menopause experience.
Stress - Okay so we cannot avoid stress . . . much like you cannot avoid menopause BUT finding ways to allow yourself to and to incorporate relaxation into your life will help you to better manage stress and lowering stress can have a positive influence on your menopause symptoms.
